Every week, I speak with steel fabricators across India who are trying to make the same decision: which CNC machines for steel fabrication should we invest in next?
It is not a simple question. Steel fabrication covers an enormous range of applications, from thin sheet metal components for automotive suppliers to ultra-thick structural plate for shipbuilders, from precision tube cutting for HVAC contractors to large-format mild steel plate work for bridge fabricators. Each application demands a different machine. Each machine makes sense for a specific material, thickness range, production volume, and edge quality requirement.
At Winarc, we have been manufacturing CNC machines for steel fabrication since 2018. In that time, I have visited hundreds of fabrication shops, understood their production challenges, and supplied the machines that solved them. I have also seen what happens when the wrong machine is chosen: wasted capital, bottlenecked production, and years of regret.
This guide is my honest assessment of the five CNC machines for steel fabrication that every fabricator should understand. These are the CNC machines for steel fabrication I recommend most often, based on real production experience across India. All five are Winarc machines, and I will give you my MD’s perspective on what each one does well and where its limitations lie.
According to the Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers’ Association (IMTMA), India’s manufacturing sector is investing heavily in automated CNC cutting technology as a foundation for quality improvement, productivity gains, and global competitiveness. The Make in India initiative has accelerated this investment across automotive, aerospace, infrastructure, and heavy engineering. Steel fabricators who invest correctly in CNC machines for steel fabrication today are the ones who win contracts tomorrow.
Let us look at the five machines.
Machine 1: WinMaster: CNC Fiber Laser Cutting Machine
Best for: Thin to medium sheet metal, 0.5 mm to 25 mm, across mixed metals.
Price range: Rs 12 lakh to Rs 80 lakh depending on laser power and bed size.
What It Is
The WinMaster is Winarc’s flagship flat sheet fiber laser cutting machine and our best-selling product overall. As a CNC machine for steel fabrication, it uses a high-powered fiber laser beam transmitted through a fiber-optic cable to cut metal with exceptional precision, speed, and edge quality.
The WinMaster is available in laser power configurations from 2 kW to 20 kW, with a working area of 4000 mm x 2000 mm and an automatic dual pallet changer that allows continuous production through simultaneous load and unload cycles.
Key Specifications
| Specification | WinMaster |
|---|---|
| Laser power | 2 kW to 20 kW |
| Working area | 4000 mm x 2000 mm |
| Max idle speed | 120 m/min |
| Positioning accuracy | plus or minus 0.03 mm |
| Pallet system | Automatic dual pallet changer |
| Controller | Fscut EtherCAT + CypCutE software |
| Cutting capacity (6 kW) | MS 25 mm, SS 12 mm, Al 6 mm |
| Materials | MS, SS, aluminium, copper, brass |
Why It Stands Out
For CNC machines for steel fabrication in the thin to medium sheet category, the WinMaster’s combination of positioning accuracy and automatic pallet system is difficult to match at this price point in India. The EtherCAT communication system delivers real-time servo response that maintains accuracy at high cutting speeds. The dual pallet changer eliminates idle time between sheet changes, increasing effective machine utilisation significantly compared to manual loading systems.
Performance
At 6 kW, the WinMaster cuts 3 mm mild steel at approximately 13 to 15 metres per minute, 6 mm mild steel at 4 to 6 metres per minute, and 12 mm mild steel at 1.5 to 2 metres per minute. Edge quality is clean and consistent with minimal heat-affected zone on stainless steel and aluminium, typically eliminating secondary finishing requirements.
Pros
- Fastest CNC machine for steel fabrication on thin to medium sheet
- Cuts all metals including copper and brass without head changes
- Automatic dual pallet changer maximises uptime
- Tight tolerances eliminate rework on precision parts
- 2 kW to 20 kW range suits light shops to industrial production
Cons
- Operating cost rises sharply above 25 mm mild steel
- Requires clean, flat material for best results
- Higher capital cost than plasma in the same working area
- Not suited for structural thick plate above 30 mm
Best for
Automotive component manufacturers, HVAC fabricators, electrical enclosure and switchgear manufacturers, stainless steel and aluminium fabricators, precision sheet metal shops, and export-quality fabrication environments.
Praveen’s Opinion
The WinMaster is the machine I recommend most often to fabricators who ask me which CNC machine for steel fabrication they should start with. If you are cutting thin to medium sheet across mixed metals and you want the best edge quality and throughput in the Indian market at this price point, this is it. The dual pallet system is what I consider non-negotiable for any serious production environment, and the WinMaster includes it as standard.
Machine 2: WinFire: CNC Plasma Cutting Machine
Best for: Mild steel from 1 mm to 50 mm, structural steel fabrication, high-volume production.
Price range: Rs 5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh depending on plasma source and bed size.
What It Is
The WinFire is Winarc’s highest-selling plasma cutting machine and the most widely used CNC machine for steel fabrication in the general fabrication segment across India. It uses a high-temperature ionised gas arc to melt and remove mild steel along a programmed cutting path, delivering fast, reliable cuts across a wide thickness range at a significantly lower capital and operating cost than fiber laser on thick plate.
The WinFire is designed for versatility, working with all plasma sources from entry-level air plasma to high-definition configurations.
Key Specifications
| Specification | WinFire |
|---|---|
| Cutting thickness | 1 mm to 50 mm (mild steel) |
| Drive system | Dual synchronised servo motors |
| Transmission | Machined railway rails, rack and pinion |
| Plasma source | Compatible with all, 40A to 200A+ |
| Positioning accuracy | plus or minus 0.03 mm |
| Max idle speed | 12,000 mm/min |
| Lubrication | Automatic |
| Materials | MS, SS, aluminium |
Why It Stands Out
Among CNC machines for steel fabrication in the structural and heavy plate segment, the WinFire’s multi-torch capability is its most distinctive advantage. A standard WinFire gantry can carry two, four, or more torches simultaneously, cutting identical profiles from the same plate at the same time and multiplying throughput without multiplying machine cost. For a structural steel contractor cutting hundreds of identical brackets, gussets, or flanges per day, this is a decisive production advantage.
Performance
At 200A high-definition plasma, the WinFire cuts 6 mm mild steel at approximately 3 to 5 metres per minute, 20 mm at 0.8 to 1.2 metres per minute, and 40 mm at 0.3 to 0.5 metres per minute. Standard air plasma at 80A delivers faster cycle times at lower thickness, with edge quality adequate for most structural welding preparation.
Pros
- Lowest capital cost of all CNC machines for steel fabrication in this guide
- Wide thickness range from 1 mm to 50 mm
- Multi-torch configuration multiplies output without additional machines
- Tolerant of painted, rusted, and scaled material condition
- Fastest on thick mild steel above 25 mm versus all other processes
Cons
- Lower edge quality than laser on thin sheet
- Cannot cut copper or brass
- Heat-affected zone larger than fiber laser
- Edge bevel on standard plasma may require grinding for precision assembly
Best for
Structural steel contractors, heavy engineering fabricators, construction equipment manufacturers, general mild steel fabrication shops, and any application where thick mild steel at high volume is the primary production requirement.
Praveen’s Opinion
The WinFire is the machine that made Winarc’s reputation in South India. It is our most versatile CNC machine for steel fabrication and the right entry point for most general fabricators. If your primary work is mild steel structural fabrication and you are price-conscious about capital investment, start here. Upgrade to high-definition plasma when your edge quality requirements demand it.
Machine 3: WinOxy: CNC Oxyfuel Cutting Machine
Best for: Thick mild steel plates from 6 mm to 350 mm, shipbuilding, bridge fabrication, heavy structural steel.
Price range: Rs 6 lakh to Rs 30 lakh depending on torch count and bed size.
What It Is
The WinOxy is Winarc’s CNC oxyfuel cutting machine, purpose-built for heavy plate steel fabrication. It is the CNC machine for steel fabrication when the material is thick mild steel and operating cost matters more than cutting speed.
Oxyfuel cutting uses a combination of oxygen and fuel gas to preheat mild steel to its ignition temperature, then directs a high-pressure oxygen jet that oxidises the metal rapidly. The process is chemically limited to mild steel and low-alloy carbon steels, but within that material range it cuts from 6 mm all the way to 350 mm at a fraction of the operating cost of plasma on equivalent thicknesses.
Key Specifications
| Specification | WinOxy |
|---|---|
| Cutting thickness | 6 mm to 350 mm (mild steel) |
| Number of torches | 1 to 8 (configurable) |
| Cutting width | 1500 mm to 6000 mm |
| Cutting length | 3000 mm to 30000 mm |
| Max traverse speed | 12,000 mm/min |
| Positional accuracy | plus or minus 0.3 mm |
| Drive system | Dual synchronised servo motors |
| Torch construction | Silver-brazed twin inner tube |
| Fuel gas options | LPG, acetylene, natural gas |
Why It Stands Out
No other CNC machine for steel fabrication matches the WinOxy’s operating economy on thick mild steel plate. Above 50 mm, plasma operating cost rises sharply. Fiber laser becomes impractical. The WinOxy cuts 100 mm mild steel at a running cost approximately 40 to 60% lower than plasma on the same material. For shipyards, bridge fabricators, and pressure vessel manufacturers cutting hundreds of tonnes of thick plate per month, this cost difference is decisive.
The eight-torch configuration is unique in this category. A single WinOxy gantry carrying eight torches simultaneously cuts eight identical profiles from the same thick plate in one pass, producing the throughput of eight single-torch machines at a fraction of the combined cost.
Performance
The WinOxy cuts 50 mm mild steel at approximately 0.5 to 0.8 metres per minute, 100 mm at 0.25 to 0.4 metres per minute, and 200 mm at 0.1 to 0.2 metres per minute. These speeds are consistent across the full thickness range without the operating cost escalation that limits other processes on heavy plate.
Pros
- Widest cutting thickness range of all CNC machines for steel fabrication
- Lowest operating cost on mild steel above 50 mm
- Multi-torch capability up to 8 simultaneous cutting torches
- Very large bed sizes up to 6000 mm x 30000 mm for shipbuilding
- Simple operation and maintenance compared to laser
Cons
- Limited to mild steel and low-alloy carbon steels only
- Preheat time adds cycle time compared to plasma and laser
- Lower positional accuracy than laser (plus or minus 0.3 mm vs 0.03 mm)
- Slower on thin material below 10 mm compared to plasma
Best for
Shipbuilding and ship repair, bridge and infrastructure fabrication, pressure vessel and boiler manufacturing, heavy structural steel contractors, mining and earthmoving equipment fabricators, and any operation where ultra-thick mild steel plate is the primary material.
Praveen’s Opinion
The WinOxy is the most specialised machine in our range and the most decisive investment for the right buyer. If you are a shipyard, bridge contractor, or pressure vessel manufacturer cutting thick mild steel every day, the WinOxy’s operating cost advantage pays back the machine investment faster than almost any other capital purchase you can make. If you are a general fabricator who only occasionally cuts above 50 mm, the WinFire plasma machine is more versatile and a better fit.
Machine 4: WinTube: CNC Tube Laser Cutting Machine
Best for: Round tubes, square tubes, I-beams, C-channels, and structural profiles.
Price range: Rs 18 lakh to Rs 60 lakh depending on laser power and chuck size.
What It Is
The WinTube is Winarc’s CNC tube laser cutting machine and the most specialised CNC machine for steel fabrication in this guide. While the other four machines cut flat plates and sheets, the WinTube cuts metal tubes, pipes, and structural profiles including I-beams, C-channels, square and rectangular hollow sections, and round pipes.
The machine rotates and indexes the tube against a fiber laser cutting head, automatically cutting complex saddle profiles, mitre joints, lateral intersections, holes, and slots from a programmed DXF drawing. A cut that takes a skilled manual fabricator 30 to 45 minutes can be produced in under 3 minutes on the WinTube, with identical accuracy on every piece.
Key Specifications
| Specification | WinTube |
|---|---|
| Profile types | Round tube, square tube, rectangular, I-beam, C-channel |
| Chuck size range | ø160 mm to ø500 mm |
| Clamping system | Electro-pneumatic chuck |
| Fume extraction | Multi-zone with individual extraction points |
| Drive system | Servo motor controlled |
| Safety | Emergency stop, machine guards |
| Materials | MS, SS, aluminium, copper |
Why It Stands Out
The WinTube is the only CNC machine for steel fabrication in this list that handles structural profiles natively. For fabricators cutting automotive exhaust systems, HVAC tube work, furniture frames, conveyor systems, or structural I-beams and C-channels for PEB construction, there is no substitute for a dedicated tube laser cutting machine. The electro-pneumatic chuck clamping ensures consistent, repeatable holding regardless of tube size, and the multi-zone fume extractor keeps the cutting environment compliant with factory safety requirements.
Performance
The WinTube processes round tubes from ø25 mm to ø500 mm and structural sections including I-beams and C-channels across a wide size range. Complex profiles that previously required multiple manual operations, including marking, sawing, grinding, and fitting, are programmed from a DXF drawing and executed automatically.
Pros
- Only CNC machine for steel fabrication that handles structural profiles natively
- Cuts complex tube profiles automatically from DXF drawings
- Eliminates manual marking, sawing, and grinding on tube fabrication
- Handles round, square, rectangular, I-beam, and C-channel profiles
- Chuck sizes from ø160 mm to ø500 mm cover all common applications
Cons
- Cannot cut flat plates or sheets
- Specialist application rather than general purpose
- Higher capital cost than manual tube cutting alternatives
- Requires operator training for profile programming
Best for
Automotive chassis fabricators, HVAC ducting and air handling equipment manufacturers, metal furniture producers, conveyor and materials handling fabricators, structural steel shops cutting PEB profiles, and any fabricator cutting significant volumes of tube or structural section.
Praveen’s Opinion
The WinTube is the machine that most fabricators do not know they need until they see how much time they are losing to manual tube cutting. The productivity gain on complex tube profiles is the most dramatic of any machine in our range. If your shop is spending more than 2 hours a day grinding and fitting manually cut tubes, the WinTube will pay for itself faster than you expect. I recommend every serious structural fabricator evaluate this machine alongside their flat-plate cutting investment.
Machine 5: WinHybrid: CNC Combination Cutting Machine
Best for: Mixed production environments requiring both plate and tube cutting, or multiple cutting processes on one machine.
Price range: Rs 15 lakh to Rs 50 lakh depending on configuration.
What It Is
The WinHybrid is Winarc’s most versatile CNC machine for steel fabrication and the leading CNC machine for metal fabrication in our range. It is a combination machine that handles both flat plate cutting and tube laser cutting from a single installation, switching between modes as required by the production schedule.
For fabrication shops that need both plate and tube cutting capability but cannot justify or accommodate two separate machines, the WinHybrid delivers both in one footprint. The WinCombo variant carries both plasma and oxyfuel torches on a single gantry, covering both thin-medium plate and thick plate cutting on one machine.
Key Specifications
| Specification | WinHybrid |
|---|---|
| Plate cutting mode | Fiber laser, full working area |
| Tube cutting mode | Fiber laser, all structural profiles |
| Chuck system | Electro-pneumatic chuck clamping |
| Control | Single CNC controller, mode switching |
| Profile types | Round tube, square, rectangular, I-beam, C-channel |
| Chuck size | Optional range for varied tube sizes |
| Materials | MS, SS, aluminium, copper |
Why It Stands Out
The WinHybrid is the CNC machine for metal fabrication that eliminates the need for two separate machines in one installation. Job shops and fabrication contractors investing in CNC machines for metal fabrication frequently need to switch between plate work and tube work within the same shift. The WinHybrid does this without requiring two capital investments, two machine footprints, or two sets of operator training.
The WinCombo variant takes this further by combining plasma and oxyfuel processes on the same gantry, covering the full mild steel thickness range from 1 mm to 350 mm on a single machine. This is the most comprehensive single-machine solution for CNC machines for metal fabrication available from Winarc.
Performance
In plate cutting mode, the WinHybrid delivers the same performance as the WinMaster fiber laser for flat sheet. In tube cutting mode, it matches the WinTube for structural profile cutting. The mode switch is programmed through the CNC controller and takes minutes, not hours.
Pros
- Dual capability eliminates the need for two separate machines
- Saves capital investment and floor space
- Single operator can handle both plate and tube production
- WinCombo variant covers plasma and oxyfuel on one gantry
- Most versatile CNC machine for metal fabrication in the Winarc range
Cons
- Compromise on optimum configuration for each individual process
- More complex setup than dedicated single-process machines
- Mode switching adds time between different job types
- Slightly lower throughput per process than dedicated single-process machines
Best for
Job shops and contract fabricators serving diverse customers, fabrication shops with mixed plate and tube production requirements, companies wanting to minimise capital expenditure while maximising production capability, and fabricators who are expanding into tube cutting from a plate cutting background.
Praveen’s Opinion
The WinHybrid is the machine I recommend to fabricators who tell me they need both capabilities but are not yet at the volume that justifies two dedicated machines. It is the smartest entry point for a growing fabrication business that wants to serve more customer types without doubling its machine investment. As volume grows in each process, the business can then consider dedicated machines while retaining the WinHybrid for overflow.

How to Choose the Right CNC Machine for Steel Fabrication
After manufacturing and supplying CNC machines for steel fabrication across India since 2018, I have developed a simple decision framework that I use with every prospective customer.
Step 1: Define your primary material and thickness. This is the most important step when evaluating CNC machines for steel fabrication. If you cut mainly mild steel above 50 mm, choose WinOxy. Between 25 mm and 50 mm, choose WinFire. Under 25 mm across mixed metals, choose WinMaster. If you cut structural profiles and tubes as a significant proportion of your work, WinTube or WinHybrid deserves serious consideration.
Step 2: Assess your edge quality requirement. Different CNC machines for steel fabrication produce different edge quality levels. Parts going directly to precision assembly need laser accuracy. Structural steel going to welding is well-served by plasma. Ultra-thick plate going to welded pressure vessels is well-served by oxyfuel.
Step 3: Calculate total cost of ownership. The purchase price of any CNC machines for steel fabrication is only the beginning. The purchase price of any CNC machine for metal fabrication is only the beginning of the cost. Operating cost per hour, consumable replacement intervals, and maintenance requirements accumulate across every shift for 10 years. The machine with the lowest purchase price is not always the most economical.
Step 4: Visit the factory and see the machine running. I personally invite every prospective Winarc customer to visit our Peenya facility, see all five machines running, and bring their own material for a demonstration cut before making any decision. Any manufacturer who is reluctant to arrange this is a manufacturer whose machine may not perform as claimed.
